Between 1997 and 2001, Eric registered as a Republican. Adams ran for the Democratic Party’s seat in the New York State Senate in 2006. He was elected Brooklyn Borough President after serving four years in the Senate. He represented the 20th Senate District. Adams was one of the 24 state senators who voted in favor of same-sex marriage and helped to legalize it when New York’s Marriage Equality Act went into effect.

In 2016, Adam launched a digital application that could be used as a paperless alternative to applying for a position on one of Brooklyn’s community boards. Adams announced in November 2020 that he would run for mayor of New York City in 2021. During the election in June 2021, it was revealed that he received more votes than the American businessman Andrew Yang, who is also a former presidential candidate.
