Eric began his career as a police officer in 1984 after attending the New York City Police Academy and graduating from there. He worked for the New York City Transit Police as well as the New York City Police Department.

During his policing career, he worked with the 6th Precinct in Greenwich Village, the 94th Precinct in Greenpoint, Clinton Hill, and many others. In the 1990s, he was the president of the Grand Council of the Guardians, an African American patrolmen’s organization.

During the 1993 Mayoral election, Eric backed David Dinkins and made a remark about Herman Badillo, a candidate for New York State Comptroller. Eric ran in the Democratic primary for the 11th Congressional District in 1994 but was defeated by Major Owens.

Between 1997 and 2001, Eric registered as a Republican. Adams ran for the Democratic Party’s seat in the New York State Senate in 2006. He was elected Brooklyn Borough President after serving four years in the Senate. He represented the 20th Senate District. Adams was one of the 24 state senators who voted in favor of same-sex marriage and helped to legalize it when New York’s Marriage Equality Act went into effect.

In 2016, Adam launched a digital application that could be used as a paperless alternative to applying for a position on one of Brooklyn’s community boards. Adams announced in November 2020 that he would run for mayor of New York City in 2021. During the election in June 2021, it was revealed that he received more votes than the American businessman Andrew Yang, who is also a former presidential candidate.
